Solnhofen - Fossils
A trip in earlier times
The Solnhofen Natural Stone achieved
world prominence by its fossil discoveries.
The most known fossil is without doubts the Archaeopteryx.
The Solnhofen Natural Stone grew in Upper Jura
about 150 millions of years ago in a lagoon
which was separated from the open sea by reefs.
In the lagoon, in regular intervals fallouts of
lime took place, which forms the fine layers of
the natural stone. This lime preserved animals
of several different habitats,
e.g. fish from the open sea, cancers which
lived on the seaground,
or also flying reptils (pterosaurs),
the kings of the air in Jura era.
Flying Reptil:
Pterodactylus kochi
Carnivor fish:
Caturus elegans
But in contrast to the diversity of the exhibits in the museum, fossils in quarries are very rare.
Big and representative fossils are extremely
rare and the originals are nearly priceless.
But if you are looking for a nice
and representative fossil,
we are pleased to offer you some copies
in museum-quality from different earth ages.
